Large Hmong Embroidered Bag

325.00

One of a kind large handbag made from antique Miao textiles.

The embroidered textiles on the front and back of this bag were originally made by two mothers awaiting the arrival of their babies. They then wore them as carriers for their newborn babies.

The ground cloth of the bag is cotton and the embroidery is silk in a range of both vibrant and faded colors.  Motifs are depictions of nature – butterflies, birds, flowers, and insects. This was a traditional custom to adorn baby carriers with such imagery, in order to welcome the child with good health and happiness.

Lined with vibrant blue cotton, with two interior pockets.

Because this is made from an old textile, dating to the 1960's, there are visible signs of wear and fading which are indicative of a long history. These imperfections add to the beauty and value of the piece.
